As The Dollar Falls Inflation Rises

Americans may just be beginning to understand the US strategy regarding the credit crisis, but foreigners understand what they are up too. The US is creating a stealth default on its debt by continuing to issue massive amounts of money and credit and in the process devaluing the dollar. This, of course, is fraud, but other nations have defrauded the US for years by cheapening their currencies and subsidizing goods and services. China may be upset as others are, but they have totally subsidized their economy and they have been the worst offenders in cheapening their currency. What do they call their current $1.25 trillion effort to keep their growth above 8%? They have 30 million unemployed and frankly fear a revolution. Chinese policy was to sell goods to America, which was unable to pay for those goods. Their $2 trillion in US denominated assets will probably end up being worth $1 trillion and they knew that going in. They wanted the market and they’ll have to pay the price. US Treasury and Fed issuance is going to get worse not better – it’s going to be that way for sometime to come. No aggregates are going to be pulled from the system. If the US does that the financial system will collapse. There is going to be massive inflation and what China should be doing is dumping dollars by buying gold. They have not anticipated the fall in US stock and bond markets and the derivative bomb. American assets, including bonds, will get badly trashed. We wrote of all this in June of 2002, but no one was listening. We could not even envision the affects of mark-to-model and the worthless balance sheets of corporate America, particularly in the financial sector. Within four years and more likely in two to three years the US will default on treasury and Agency debt. That should take the dollar in USDX terms to 40. It is now just below 80. China obviously feels the yields offered on US paper on the long end are not worth the play. They have been buying bills instead in the short-term market that the Fed has to support. Today investors cannot conceive how bad this depression is going to get. Even the Bilderbergs see they cannot handle what is coming and want to reverse the process. Unfortunately it is too late for that. There has been no return since June of 2002. The Chinese knew 5 years ago they were screwed, but they kept on playing the game. They had to supply jobs or they might have had a revolution. The illuminist plan to bring China into WTO was a very bad choice. All the money the transnational conglomerates made will eventually be lost.

When we see Dr. Kenneth Rogoff, IMF economist, advocating 6% inflation we have to laugh.

America is burdened in expensive wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan and is still occupying Iraq. This has cost Americans almost $1 trillion and it won’t end for years, an expensive distraction. We know war was created to enrich the elitists among other things, but the result has been disastrous not only for America but for the elitists as well. The Chinese have played a very dangerous game and if they try to get nasty as a creditor holding debt the US will just default. The Chinese will have to take their losses and perhaps start a war. America is in receivership and they should simply go into bankruptcy. We can bring our troops home, get rid of the Fed, pass trade tariffs, clear Wall Street out of Washington and let the treason and criminal trials begin.

Our guess is that all kinds of deals have been made illegally that we know nothing about with China. We must find out what these deals were. The only way we can do that is by removing those from power, who made those deals.

Keynesian inflationism is so engrained in economic orthodoxy that it is very hard to get a dissenting view. 90% of economists and analysts work for large corporations, which more often than not are run by Illuminists. IF you speak out of line you are out of a job. That is why few disagree. We just did about 30 interviews on Fox News and we were told we would no longer be allowed on the network to speak on the Federal Reserve. This is today’s version of freedom of the press-or media. If you do not like it ban it. Economists and analysts face the same problem. Policymakers have charted a course that risks bankrupting the economy and the Fed are at the core of the problem. They are doing everything possible to destroy the US economy.

When we see Dr. Kenneth Rogoff, IMF economist, advocating 6% inflation we have to laugh. It is still running at 9-1/2%. Food prices continue to rise and gasoline is moving higher as are oil prices. To insinuate that inflation would ameliorate the debt bomb and help in the de-leveraging process is pure folly. Then we have professor Mankiw who advocates negative interest rates. You borrow $100 and pay back $97. That is idiotic and this man is teaching our children, someone has to tell me how incurring more debt will allow us to escape debt? We are nearing 50 years in finance and economics and we cannot believe the unmitigated crap we are hearing from so-called experts. If these are experts please dear Lord send us the uneducated. They at least have common sense. These are the same people, along with government, banking and Wall Street who are creating another debt bomb. Federal debt is expanding at an unheard of 13%. As a result yields are rising as are gold and silver and the dollar is falling. It is only a matter of time until a crisis of confidence occurs in the Treasury market. This year the yield has moved from 2.35% to 3.45% on the 10-year notes and they and the 30’ have broken their 200-day moving averages. At the same time the Fed has induced these low rates for mortgages, as risk is transferred to the taxpayer via loans being guaranteed by the GSE’s, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In just two years we will again face this debt bomb to go along with ALT-A loans, Option-ARM-pick and pay loans and prime loan failures due to rising, encompassing unemployment. That will occur in 2011 and 2012. The failure of the housing market is only 40% to 50% over. All this is happening as policymakers, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citicorp, etc., and the rest of the elitists are shifting all the debt from the financial sector to the American people. Virtually no one talks about what is really going on. The same people at the Fed, in banking, on Wall Street and in government are supposedly solving the problems they created. We have news for you; they are not solving anything. They are just pushing judgment day a little further out. That is costing us $2 trillion in additional debt a year, which we can ill afford. The bomb gets bigger every day and you won’t want to be around when it explodes.

We hope you are all aware that as the dollar falls inflation rises. That is because we don’t produce much anymore and as the dollar declines the cost of imported goods rises, including oil. By the end of the year oil could be $80 a barrel and gasoline over $3.00 a gallon. It started to feed on itself two months ago.

As long as the privately owned Fed and the rest of the Illuminists are calling the shots speculative market dynamics and casino chaos will reign. These arrogant criminals are taking gambling to even greater heights. They profit because the Fed briefs them of what is going on so they can reap riches. Manipulation is the order of the day. All Keynesian thieves love massive stimulus as the bubbles burst. This time there is no way back. This repeat will rival the collapse of the Lombard System in Venice in 1348. The more important question is will we have another plague to accompany the Illuminist plague?

The real reason banks want to return TARP funds is that banks do not want examiners uncovering any of their illegal activities.

When the Allen Stanford case broke we told you that his operation was a front for CIA money laundering. BBC recently ran a story connecting him with the DEA. As that story broke he was told there would be no criminal action against him, a fact the mainline press forgot to carry. It could be narcos were depositing money in his operation and he and the CIA decided to relieve them of their ill begotten gains. That is robbing the competition. Stanford has had narco connections since 1990.

The GDP price deflator rose at 2.9% in the first quarter, this while meatheads tell us there is no inflation and deflation is the problem. Monetization will soon send inflation flying.

Last week the stock market failed again to advance, forming an ever-bigger top. The Dow added 0.1%; S&P gained 0.5%; the Russell 2000 gained 0.4% and Nasdaq rose 0.6%. – a week of desperation. Consumers rose 1.6%; utilities fell 0.3%; cyclicals rose 2.5%; transports fell 1.5%; banks declined 2.6% and broker/dealers gained 4.2%. High tech rose 1.7%; semis jumped 3.4%; Internets gained 1.5% and biotechs rallied 0.7%. Gold billion rose $26.00 and the HUI Index surged 10.9%.

Two-year Treasury bills rose 4 bps to 0.85% and the 10’s surged 31 bps to 3.45% – a total breakdown. German 10-year bund yields rose 18 bps to 3.54%.

Freddie Mac 30-year fixed rate mortgage rates fell 2 bps to 4.82%. They’ll soon be 5%, although major banks are offering 4-1/2% to 4-3/4%. The 15’s fell 2 bps to 4.50%; one-year ARMs rose 11 bps to 4.82% and 30-year fixed rate jumbos fell a notable 15 bps to 6.22%.

Fed credit rose $48.6 billion and it is off $81.4 billion ytd. It is up $1.294 trillion yoy or 149%. Fed foreign holdings of Treasuries, Agency debt surged $25.9 billion to a record $2.710 trillion. Custody holdings for foreign central banks have been expanding at 20% ytd, and were up $433 billion yoy, or 19%.

Bank credit fell $34.4 billion and it is up 3.6% yoy. Securities credit was up $6.1 billion; loans and leases fell $40.6 billion; C&I loans fell $9 billion and real estate loans fell $24 billion. Consumer loans fell $8.4 billion and securities loans were little changed. Other loans rose $0.6 billion.

M2 narrow money supply rose $8.9 billion. It is up 3.9% ytd. Total money market funds dropped $16 billion to $3.774 trillion. The dollar index fell 3.6% to 80.05.

The bond market is not falling because there is deflation in our future, but because the dollar is again tanking. That is why gold and silver is rising. There is also the matter of US debt going into the stratosphere and the increase in interest rates in the demand for higher yields to combat coming inflation.

Based on nominal growth over the next ten years the CBO, the Congressional Budget Office, believes that GDP will grow 50%. There is not a chance that will happen. In fact, we could have no growth over that period. Yet, the proposed administration plan is to increase spending 50%. This shows you the desperation and stupidity of what is going on in Washington. Their only plan is to inflate until the system collapses. The robust recovery will only bring our negative GDP down to even as the stimulus package spreads its benefits. That will be some feat with real U6 unemployment at 19.2% to 19.8%. These facts and government projections will sink not only the dollar, but also sink the entire economy. America is looking at deficits of more than $1 trillion a year as far as the eye can see. Doesn’t anyone understand the impact of such borrowing? What foreigners can be stupid enough to lend to us unless yields are perhaps 15% on treasuries. That means the alternative is massive monetization and wild inflation. Making matters worse the whole world is experiencing the same problems. GDP growth has fallen 8% in Britain; 21% in Mexico; 14% in Germany and 15% in Japan. Chinese exports are down 41%, Japanese 38% and Germany’s 32%. The value of outstanding loans in Spain has fallen from $445 billion to $47 billion. They had risen between 2000 and 2008 by 850%. That was almost 50% of Spanish GDP. This is a direct product of the ECB, European Central Bank policy, of one interest rate for all 16 members, which is idiotic. Real unemployment in Spain is far above 20%. Ireland, due to the same misguided monetary policy, is almost as badly off. Both Spain and Ireland are insolvent.

Europeans, deceived by bogus securities ratings by Moody’s, S&P and Fitch, are even worse off than US banks. Thus far the Fed has bailed out European banks, but that cannot go on indefinitely. Oddly we see no civil and criminal actions against American banks and securities industry or the rating companies, which tells us they knew exactly what they were buying – toxic waste.

The money raising dynamic for the Treasury is overwhelming. 30-year fixed rate mortgages should be around 5% this shortened week. The Treasury needs to raise $2 trillion this year of which the Fed has already monetized about $300 billion, plus the Fed is buying $900 billion in toxic waste. This is $1.2 trillion in monetization by the Fed.

On Tuesday the Fed is selling $40 billion of 2-year bills, $35 billion of 5-year notes and $25 billion of 7-year bonds. We wonder if the Fed will suffer the indignity of its first failed auction. $100 billion is a lot of money. US Treasuries may face a crowding out process, as governments collectively will have to place $6 trillion in debt this year. That means international business will find it even harder raising money in the future. The US has already lost control of long rates, just look at how easily and cleanly the 10-year notes and the 30-year bonds broke their 200-day moving averages. Markets are choking on debt. The end result will be US stagflation and a falling dollar, along with higher yields. The Fed claims it has only bought $116 billion of monetized Treasuries, but we believe that number is higher. The Fed won’t raise interest rates, but the market is going too.

U.S. Military Investigator Confirms Women and Children Were Raped At Abu Ghraib 280509top

It only took five years, but the mainstream media has finally acknowledged the truth behind why certain photos and videos from the infamous Abu Ghraib prison camp have been blocked from public release – they show U.S. soldiers and other prison guards raping female detainees as well as children.

In an interview with the London Telegraph, Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq, confirmed the details of his original army report, that the unreleased photos showed rape and sexual abuse of women and minors.

“At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee,” reports the Telegraph, adding, “Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.”

Taguba also verified the credibility of eyewitness statements from other detainees that described an American-Egyptian male translator in uniform raping teenage boys.

Among the graphic statements, which were later released under US freedom of information laws, is that of Kasim Mehaddi Hilas in which he says: “I saw [name of a translator] ******* a kid, his age would be about 15 to 18 years. The kid was hurting very bad and they covered all the doors with sheets. Then when I heard screaming I climbed the door because on top it wasn’t covered and I saw [name] who was wearing the military uniform, putting his **** in the little kid’s ***…. and the female soldier was taking pictures.”

“These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency,” Taguba told the Telegraph.

Taguba’s confirmation that the photos depict rape mean that President Obama could only have been lying when he claimed, “I want to emphasize that these photos that were requested in this case are not particularly sensational, especially when compared to the painful images that we remember from Abu Ghraib.”

As we reported last week, such horrors have been on the record for years, yet corporate media coverage of the Abu Ghraib scandal still frames the entire issue in the context that the “abuse” consisted merely of college fraternity-style humiliation and stacking prisoners in human pyramids.

In reality, the very worst of the torture has never been seen and it includes raping women and children, as well as brutally beating detainees to death.

Further details were also made public by New Yorker investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who in July 2004 told an ACLU conference,

“Some of the worst things that happened you don’t know about, okay?” said Hersh. “Videos, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib … The women were passing messages out saying ‘Please come and kill me, because of what’s happened’ and basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children in cases that have been recorded. The boys were sodomized with the cameras rolling. And the worst above all of that is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking that your government has. They are in total terror. It’s going to come out.”

Following his refusal to release the unseen photos, the ACLU charged that President Obama “has essentially become complicit with the torture that was rampant during the Bush years by being complicit in its coverup.” The Obama administration has also sought to protect intelligence officials involved in torture from prosecution at every turn.

Obama continuing Bush’s assault on the middle class

    Robert Stark
    The Examiner
    May 28, 2009

Despite receiving the majority of middle class votes, George Bush was one of the worst presidents for the middle class. Bush promoted free trade deals that sent our jobs overseas, promoted amnesty for illegal immigrants, and greater guest worker programs while our borders remain unsecured. Bush continued to spend to the point of breaking Lyndon Johnson’s record by increasing the size of government. He borrowed from nations that are not the friendliest such as China and Saudi Arabia contributing to the current financial crisis, while the federal reserve printed money out of thin air devaluing our currency. Bush passed massive tax cuts that favored the wealthy and did nothing to address the budget deficit.

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

Bush was denounced by his political opponents as a tool of corporate and oil interest. Obama was able to capitalize on Bush’s failed economic policies but, in reality, has continued Bush’s economic assault on the middle class. Obama spoke out against corporate greed but, along with McCain, supported the bailouts of Wall Street signed by President Bush. Obama’s second top source of donations was the financial firm Goldman Sachs which received billions in bailout money from the taxpayers. Obama appointed Timothy Geithner as Secretary of the Treasury who, as chairman of the New York Branch of the Federal Reserve, arranged the bailout of Lehman Brothers. Geithner also stated he is open to the idea of a global currency.

On spending, Obama has continued the same economic policies of the Bush administration of deficit spending and printing money out of thin air through the Federal Reserve. Obama supported the McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill in the Senate that Bush supported and vows to bring back so called comprehensive immigration reform as president. Obama flip flopped on the issue of reforming NAFTA during the democratic primary but has failed to address reforming it since then.

Sotomayor on the Supreme Court: A Gun-grabber’s Dream Come True

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars
    May 28, 2009

Obama Supreme Court pick Sonia Sotomayor believes that suspects captured on the battlefield must receive all rights afforded to American citizens under the Constitution. That’s the good news. Now here’s the bad. She thinks American citizens don’t have the right to own firearms.

featured stories Sotomayor on the Supreme Court: A Gun grabbers Dream Come True
Ron Paul featured stories Sotomayor on the Supreme Court: A Gun grabbers Dream Come True
Sonia Sotomayor has an extensive track record revealing her hostility toward the Second Amendment.

As a graduate student at Princeton University, Sotomayor wrote a these entitled “Deadly Obsession: American Gun Culture.” In the text, Sotomayor makes the argument that the Second Amendment does not actually afford individual citizens the right to bear arms. She believes only the military has this right. According to Sotomayor, it has been illegal for individuals to own firearms since the passing of the Bill of Rights.

In 2004, in U.S. v. Sanchez-Villar, a three-judge panel that included Sotomayor wrote that “the right to possess a gun is clearly not a fundamental right.” In another case, Sotomayor ruled that it is illegal for citizens to keep nunchakus in their homes.

Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, said on Wednesday that “Judge Sotomayor’s position on the Second Amendment is a clear signal that Mr. Obama’s claim that he supports gun rights is nothing but lip service,” reports CBS News.

“Judge Sotomayor’s record suggests hostility, rather than empathy, for the tens of millions of Americans who exercise their right to keep and bear arms,” said Dave Kopel of the Independence Institute.

Ken Blackwell of the Family Research Council believes her nomination amounts to “a declaration of war against America’s gun owners.”

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

Earlier this year, Sotomayor ruled that states do not have to obey the Second Amendment’s commandment that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, according to CNSNews. In Maloney v. Cuomo, Sotomayor signed an opinion of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that said the Second Amendment does not protect individuals from having their right to keep and bear arms restricted by state governments.

Sonia Sotomayor would be a perfect Supreme Court justice for the Obama administration. Obama the supposed constitutional scholar is a notorious gun-grabber, although the corporate media refuses to underscore this fact. He endorsed the unconstitutional Illinois gun ban. In classic doublethink fashion, he has declared support for the Second Amendment in principle but backed local gun bans. Obama wants to ban “all forms” of semi-autos. But it is not simply semi-automatics — he would even ban most common rimfire target pistols, including those used in Olympic competition. For more on Obama’s gun-grabbing philosophy, see Barak Obama’s Gun Control Positions.

Many Americans understand Obama wants to outlaw guns and in response they are purchasing guns and ammo in record numbers. “Gun sales are on the rise across the U.S. and many dealers are having trouble keeping guns and ammunition in stock. Sales of guns moved sharply upward last November, the same month voters chose a new president,” reports VOA News.

A growing number of states understand the federal government is gearing up to not only outlaw firearms and trash the Second Amendment, but possibly confiscate them as well.

For instance, Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen has promised to sign a bill today making it legal to possess a firearm during martial law. “Sponsors say martial rule is the same as martial law at the federal level. They say the law is necessary after law enforcement in New Orleans went door to door seizing weapons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,” reports the Associated Press.

Insane Thug Cops Attack Emergency Paramedic

    Infowars
    May 28, 2009

All across the country, cops are attacking people for not responding quick enough to barked commands or for not groveling in deference to their thuggish authority. Insane and violent cops have been caught repeatedly on tape and video assaulting non-violent citizens, tasering and even murdering them (Infowars and Prison Planet are replete with such stories).

In a recent incident, Oklahoma cops pulled over an EMT vehicle and assaulted a paramedic:

    From the New9 website:

PADEN, Oklahoma — An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper and a paramedic were caught on tape scuffling Sunday while a patient was being taken to the hospital.

The fight happened on Highway 62, near Paden, after a OHP and first responders argued over a close call on the road.

OHP alleges that one of the paramedics on the video assaulted the trooper, but the assault was not caught on tape.

“We’re like trying to tell the guy, ‘Dude, my mom is in the back,’ and my stepdad was like, ‘My wife is in the back. Can we do this at the hospital?’” said Kenyada Davis.

Kenyada Davis’ mother was the woman in the back of the ambulance being treated for heat exhaustion.

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

He was able to shoot the altercation with his cell phone’s camera.

Davis said it all started because the ambulance failed to yield to OHP troopers, who were en route to a call along highway 62 in Paden.

Davis said the driver of the ambulance was trying to avoid hitting a car that slowed down and wasn’t aware of troopers nearby until it was too late.

“He slowed down, and as the car was getting over, that’s when he passed us,” Davis said. “I didn’t hear him.”

But after OHP troopers finished their official business, they pulled the Creek Nation ambulance over. One of the troopers chided Paul for failing to yield.

Once the ambulance was pulled over, Davis pulled out his phone and shot video of the scene.

Watch the full video of the altercation between the trooper and first responders.

According to the OHP, the paramedics assaulted the trooper just before the fight broke out.

“It didn’t look like it was being handled very well, at least form the tape I saw from the troopers’ standpoint,” said NEWS 9 Legal Analyst Irven Box.

The entire scene, including the alleged assault was captured on dash cam video and has not been released.

The Okfuskee County District Attorney’s office is reviewing all of the footage and could file criminal charges against the paramedic by the end of the week.

Pelosi: “Every aspect of our lives must be subjected to an inventory”

    Chris Horner
    The American Spectator
    May 28, 2009

By now you’ve surely seen the story, splashed by Drudge, of Nancy Pelosi letting a certain nasty little kitten out of the bag with “Every aspect of our lives must be subject to inventory” in the fight against Man-made global warming. In China, no less, so talk about preaching to the choir.

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

Ms. Pelosi justified her curious priorities of going to China to talk about that pressing issue – and possibly a mutual defense pact against Spectre, the Loch Ness Monster and Rodin – at the expense of peripheral issues like human rights in her trademark say anything style. She simply asserted that, by hectoring on global warming — which all draft international and domestic enterprises demand that it be mostly the U.S., with no meaningful sacrifice by world’s-largest CO2 emitter China, that’s supposed to sacrifice in order to pretend we’re controlling the weather — she is talking about human rights. Tell that to the prisoners, ma’am.

Anyway, what you may not have seen yet is the quite relevant Chapter 6 in Red Hot Lies: How Global Warming Alarmists Uses Threats, Fraud and Deception to Keep You Misinformed, “Big Government: How Government, Politicians, and Alarmists Abuse Power in the Pursuit of Power”. It is there that I detail the greens’ wistful descriptions of China as the kind of system that’s necessary to make their stalled agenda reality.

Which if you think about it is pretty much what Pelosi was really saying.

Abu Ghraib abuse photos ’show rape’

    Duncan Gardham
    Telegraph
    May 28, 2009

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

    • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
    • efoods

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.

Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.

The graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.

The U.S. is embarking on a $1 billion crash program to expand its diplomatic presence in Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan, another sign that the Obama administration is making a costly, long-term commitment to war-torn South Asia, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The White House has asked Congress for — and seems likely to receive — $736 million to build a new U.S. embassy in Islamabad, along with permanent housing for U.S. government civilians and new office space in the Pakistani capital.

The scale of the projects rivals the giant U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, which was completed last year after construction delays at a cost of $740 million.

Senior State Department officials said the expanded diplomatic presence is needed to replace overcrowded, dilapidated and unsafe facilities and to support a “surge” of civilian officials into Afghanistan and Pakistan ordered by President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

South Korean and US troops placed on high alert

US and South Korean forces raised their military alert level today, a day after North Korea renounced the 55-year-old truce on the peninsula and threatened war if its ships are searched for weapons of mass destruction.

Three days after North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test, the US-South Korea combined forces command moved its level of surveillance to the second-highest level on its scale of five, the highest since North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006.

Meanwhile, the North’s state media accused the allies of plotting an attack, and warned that small incidents could have disastrous consequences. “The northward invasion scheme by the US and the South Korean puppet regime has exceeded the alarming level,” the Workers’ Newspaper said in an editorial. “A minor accidental skirmish can lead to a nuclear war.”

In Seoul, the spokesman for South Korea’s defence ministry said: “We are maintaining a tight defence posture to prevent the North’s military provocations. The military will deal sternly with provocative acts.” The South Korean JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported that the Government has deployed extra anti-air missiles and artillery on five disputed islands in the Yellow Sea near the disputed sea border with the North.

The number of cases of insulin-dependent diabetes among children under five is expected to double in the next 11 years, according to experts. If present trends continue, by 2020 the number of children with type 1 diabetes will be twice the number it was four years ago.

According to a new study about 15,000 new cases of insulin-dependent, or type 1, diabetes were recorded across the whole of Europe in 2005. Of these, 24% were children up to the age of four, 37% children aged five to nine, and 34% children aged 10 to 14.

The surge in new cases means that the overall incidence of the disease is increasing by 3.9% a year, with the steepest increase coming in very young children.

The increase in the 0-four age group was 5.4% with a 4.3% rise in the five-nine age group and a 2.9% increase among 10 to 14-year-olds.
